English grammar isn’t always logical, which is why it’s not always easy. Your instincts can lead you astray.

Once memorized, your knowledge of these rules will become ingrained. By then you’ll know exactly how to use an apostrophe or place a comma without having to think about it—but until then it’s nice to have a cheat sheet for reference.

Remember: The work’s not over when you lift your hands from the keyboard or put down your pen. Proofreading is as much a part of the writing process as putting words on the page. Give yourself a break to collect your thoughts, and then go back to your work to make sure it’s mistake free.
